Hidden Room

Here is the synopsis for The Hidden Room which is the sequel to The Magical Garden

Bess starts school in the one room school-house. There are four kids in her class which was different to what she was used to. There are only 25 kids in the school taught by one teacher.

Uncle Joe discovers a hidden room in his house while he was renovating. He finds a trunk, a suitcase and some journals. He takes everything over to Bess so she can go through them so she can find some clues about the older part of the house.

Bess sill has to wear a brace but has decided to make the most of it. She looks forward to going to school again. Megan lives down the street and goes to school with her. They both have to repeat grade five. Bess almost walks normally but with a slight limp. She has learned to trust people again. She still misses her dad a great deal and wishes he was there to share things with. She writes in her diary all the time. Bess is excited about reading the journals and looking through the suitcase and trunk. She recalls the discussions she had with her dad while they read mysteries.

The school year gets off to an exciting start. A couple of students were late which interrupted the morning class. At recess some of the boys get into a fight. Jeff was the only boy in grade five. The other boys teased him.

Miss Grayson has the children form a sports and improvement committee. The kids learn organizational skills and to work as a team. On their field trip the students rescue an abandoned dog and her puppies. They meet Miss Prate, the artist, who helps them with the dog and puppies.

Bess and Megan experience many things for the first time in a small town. Life was very different that what it was in the city.

Bess spends a lot of time reading the journals and diary. They find clues in the trunk and suitcase. Mr. Hub tells them a story that gives more clues. Bess shares everything in the journals and diary with Megan. They find the secret door while playing in Megan’s backyard.

Bess experiences her first real bad snow storm that shuts down the town for almost a week. In the spring everyone is worried about flooding. Someone goes down to the river everyday keeping an eye on the water levels. A couple of boys fell in the river bu were rescued quickly. Bess and Pumpkin were able to start spending more time in the garden. They prepare the garden for planting. Megan and Josie help Bess and Mrs. O’Toole with the planting.

They start preparing for final exams with daily reviews and extra homework. Finally school was over for the year. Everyone was glad to have more free time again.
